Predictive information sharing between pediatric oncology clinicians and parental figures is a complex dynamic. However, there is no review that has examined only the research on prognostic communication in the context of pediatric oncology. This review consolidates the existing data regarding prognostic communication in pediatric oncology and suggests avenues for future research. Methods: We performed a comprehensive integrative review, querying six databases for studies on prognostic communication within pediatric oncology, as of August 2022. A descriptive and narrative approach was utilized in our data analysis procedures. The investigation comprised fourteen quantitative studies, in addition to five qualitative studies. All the studies were restricted to locations within Western developed countries. Included in the study were 804 parents of the 770 children affected by cancer. The parental figures, as observed across multiple studies, were mostly female, Non-Hispanic White, and held high school diplomas or equivalent higher degrees of education. According to many parents, the process of prognostic communication was initiated during the first year subsequent to their child's diagnosis. High-quality prognostic communication was positively correlated with trust and hope, and negatively correlated with parental distress and decisional regret.
